Iberian and Medieval Archaeological site: l’Esquerda

Description

The excavations are revealing a settlement 462 m above sea level, that stood on one of the first crags formed by the Ter as it plunges into the area known as les Guilleries. This offered a strategic location to control the whole of the Plain and the main route of communication with the coast in what is now the Province of Girona. Assuredly this explains the continuous human occupation of the site from prehistoric times down to the Middle Ages.

Visitors can see some of the archaeological remains recovered during the course of the excavations undertaken which are displayed at the Museu Arqueològic de l’Esquerda . Since 2000, the archaeological site at l’Esquerda forms part of the ’Route of the Ibers’ and is one of the three sites in Osona that make up the ’Land of the Ausetans’.
