The monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres, the only Benedictine one in the district of Osona, was founded under the protection of the viscounts of Osona-Cardona. Viscountess Ermetruit, who in 1006 purchased the allodial freehold of Casserres, originally promoted it for the purpose of building there a monastery dedicated to Saint Peter. | |
The monastery has become a unique and attractive piece, not only because of its architectonical and historical relevance, but also because of the beauty of the place where it lies. So, we are in front of one of the most precious jewels of Catalan Romanesque, placed in one of the meanders of the river Ter, next to Sau’s swamp and surrounded by spectacular views. Nowadays, the monastery has a permanent exhibition which interprets the Casserres Benedictine monk’s life’s thorough recreations of the stances, which has been conserved with the same disposition among centuries.
